Reactor Vessel, 1981

Reactor vessel of the Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Generating Station, near Jenkinsville, South Carolina; photographed prior to the facility's opening in mid-1981. The vessel extends down 50 feet into the ground and 157 nuclear fuel assemblies will sit down in the reactor. One-third of the fuel will be removed each year and new fuel added to replace it. A reactor vessel head will sit atop the vessel, which appears here as a dark hole. The surrounding space is the containment area.
