The Edinburgh mob carrying Captain Porteous to execution. Captain John Porteous, c. 1695 1736. Scottish soldier and Captain of the Edinburgh City or Town Guard. He was lynched by a mob during the Porteous Riots of 1736 for his part in the killing of innocent civilians while ordering the men under his command to quell a disturbance during a public hanging in the Grassmarket.
