Brooch in the Form of a Dog, 2nd century, Roman, Champlevé enamel, bronze, Overall: 3/4 x 1 11/16 x 1/4 in. (1.9 x 4.3 x 0.7 cm), Enamels-Champlevé, Small brooches, often in whimsical animal forms, were worn both by Roman soldiers stationed in the provinces and by the native population. Though brooches in these forms appear throughout the Roman world, the distribution of finds and the archaeological remains of workshops suggest that the major centers of production were Britain and Gaul.
