This drawing is from Robert Hooke's original copper plate, simply reprinted with titles added by Barker, who anonymously reissued the rediscovered plates as 'Micrographia Restaurata.' Hooke was a chemist, physicist and architect. He materially invented the compound microscope, the quadrant and a marine barometer. He also published the first book of biological and chemical microscopal observations; he anticipated the invention of the steam engine, formulated Hooke's Law on elastic bodies and theories on the arch, the balance spring fo watches and the anchor escapement of clocks. He built the first Gregorian telescope and inferred the roation of Jupiter.
