Caption: William Harrison Ainsworth, author, 1881. Ainsworth (1805-1882) was a prolific writer of historical romantic fiction. His best-known works were 'Rookwood' (1834), which popularised the story of the highwayman Dick Turpin, and 'Windsor Castle' (1843), which concerns the legend of Herne the Hunter.
