The scene inside Lieutenant Greely's tent when the relief party arrived on 22 June 1884. In 1881 Adolphus Washington Greely (1844-1935), American Arctic explorer, led the American expedition of 25 men to set up a meteorological station at Smith Sound as part of the first International Polar Year. In 1883 the relief boat failed to arrive and when the rescue party arrived in 1884 only six men survived. Engraving from 'The Graphic' (London, 1884).
