Usto Mumin, born Alexander Nikolaev (1897-1957), was a Russian artist who settled in Uzbekistan in 1920. He embraced Uzbek culture wholheartedly and adopted Islam, changing his name to Usto Mumin, while devoting himself to the study of Uzbek music and dance. As an adoptive Uzbek, he is considered a leading representative of Central Asian avant garde painting of the 1920s and 1930s.
