Title: Dancer at a Café Concert
Caption: Dancer at a Café Concert. Artist: Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen (French (born Switzerland), Lausanne 1859-1923 Paris). Dimensions: 17 1/16 x 14 1/8 in. (43.4 x 35.8 cm). Date: 1892-93.
An illustrator and poster artist, Steinlen's flamboyant imagery of the café concert invites comparison with Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, his neighbor in Paris. Steinlen was the principal illustrator of Le Mirliton, a journal published by Aristide Bruant, the owner of a cabaret by the same title. Steinlen made this drawing as a cover design for the 17 February 1893 issue of the journal, to illustrate the song "Tha-ma-ra-boum-di-hé" and its accompanying dance, the high-kicking chahut.
