Louis Botha, first Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa

World War I - Louis Botha (27 September 1862 27 August 1919) Afrikaner and . A Boer war hero during the Second Boer War, he went on to become first Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa. In 1914 Botha offered immediate military assistance to the British. This sparked rebellion among a portion of the Afrikaner community. Botha chose to personally lead the Union forces assembled to quell the rebellion (led by Generals de Wet and Beyers).
