Thomas Becket (1118-1170). Lord Chancellor (1155-1162) and Archbishop of Canterbury (1162-1170). He came into conflict with King Henry II of England (1133-1189) over the rights and privileges of the Church. He was assassinated by followers of the king on 29 December 1170, at the atrium of Canterbury Cathedral. Becket was surrounded and attacked by four Anglo-Norman knights, William de Tracy, Reginald Fitzurse, Hugh de Morville and Richard de Brito. Assassination of Becket. Engraving, 1863.
