Pyrenean Ibex, Extinct

The Pyrenean ibex (Capra pyrenaica pyrenaica) was one of the four subspecies of the Iberian ibex or Iberian wild goat, a species endemic to the Pyrenees. This species was common during the Holocene and Upper Pleistocene. In January 2000, the Pyrenean ibex became extinct. An attempt in 2003 to revive the subspecies through cloning also failed, after the animal died from a lung defect minutes after birth. Illustration by Richard Lydekker, 1898, from a sketch by Joseph Wolf.
