Emmanuel Joseph Sieyes, French clergyman and statesman, 19th century. Sieyes (1748-1836) was one of the chief theorists of the French Revolution. His  pamphlet, What Is the Third Estate? (1788), became the manifesto of the Revolution. In 1799, Sieyes instigated the coup d'etat of 18 Brumaire which brought Napoleon to power.
