The saber has a silver hilt whose baffle plate is decorated with floral motifs. The ivory handle is wrapped with twisted silver thread and a handle cap that ends in a hilt knob in the shape of a crowned lion's head. A dragon or sable brush hangs from the hilt. The blade is partly blued and etched in relief with the text Queen Wilhelmina for shown prowess // 1st Lieutenant of the Infantry H. Colyn. Aceh, June-December 1899. The sheath is made of German silver and has drag-plate and bands decorated with floral motifs and a single ring.
