Aeration Tank at Water Treatment Plant

Air is injected and mixed into water in an aeration tank. This is the first step in the "Activated Sludge" water treatment process, in which both air and microorganisms are used to oxidize organic pollutants, producing a waste "sludge" of oxidized material. Photographed at the Southside Water Treatment Plant in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
