Orig. bildtext... SKY PROBER Hawthorne, Cal...John H. Griffith, research test pilot for The National Advisory Committee For Aeronautics, is shown with The U.S. Air Force's new Northrup X-4, which soon will begin a series of Aerial Research Flights to obtain data that will make airplanes of the future faster and safer. Griffith is to man the controls of the research plane during an intensive flight investigation of high sub-sonic speeds. Twin gas turbines enable the X-4 to remain aloft longer than rocket-propelled X ships. Patterned after the big flying wings built by Northrup for The Air Force, the X-4 has a vertical fin but no horizontal tail surfaces. Elaborate NACA instrumentation will automatically record the forces encountered at flight in the region of the sonic barrier during prolonged flights. Anm. Planet heter egentligen Northrop X-4.
