Illustrated plate from "The Natural History of Beetles" by John Ray.  Art by William Home Lizars (1788 – 30 March 1859), a Scottish painter and engraver.  Edited by Sir William Jardine, 7th Baronet (1800 - 1874), a Scottish naturalist from Edinburgh.  Jardine made natural history available to all levels of Victorian society by editing and issuing the hugely popular forty volumes of The Naturalist's Library.
