Title page of The Life and Adventures of the American Cow-Boy. Life in the Far West by Clark Stanley, Better Known as the Rattle-Snake King. Books like this - published in 1897 - helped create the legend of the American West. Stanley claimed he had learned the secrets of snake oil medicine from a Hopi medicine man and made considerable money marketing his own patent concoction - Snake Oil Liniment - which when examined after the introduction of the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 was found to be worthless. The man on the bucking bronco is supposed to be Stanley himself.
