Laennec, RenE`-ThE`ophile-Hyacinthe (Quimper, 1781Kerlouarnec, 1826). French doctor. In 1816 he introduced the use of a hollow tube to listen to the lungs and heart, giving rise to the modern stethoscope. He gathered his studies of auscultation in the play "TraitE` de lauscultation Mediate" (1819).
