Huias (front) female (behind). Extinct Birds front cover by Errol Fuller. Chromolithograph from a painting by John Gerrard Keulemans (1842-1912) in Sir Walter Lawry Buller's History of the Birds of New Zealand 1887-88. Sir Walter Lawry Buller (1838 -1906) was a New Zealand Lawyer, naturalist and Ornithologist. In 1882 he produced the Manual of the Birds of New Zealand as a cheaper, popular alternative. In 1905, he published a two-volume Supplement to the History of the Birds of New Zealand which brought the work up to date. Keulemans was the most sought-after bird artist of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A prolific, talented, work-oriented illustrator, he produced quantities of excellent bird plates for books and journals of the period. Although he worked largely from bird specimens, he was adept at creating drawings that were anatomically correct as well as attractively presented.
