Temple of Bacchus, Baalbek, Lebanon, c1920s-c1930s(?). Baalbek is the site of the ancient city of Heliopolis, which rose to prominence during the later Hellenistic and Roman period. The main temple complex had sanctuaries devoted to Jupiter (Baal), Venus (Aphrodite), and Bacchus, with a further temple to Mercury (Hermes) nearby. The Temple of Bacchus was built in the mid 2nd century aD during the reign of the Emperor Antoninus Pius.
