The Golden Horn, Constantinople, 1850. Creator: Unknown.

The Golden Horn, Constantinople, [modern Istanbul], 1850. 'One of our artistic correspondents has sketched the great harbour...The pontoon bridge was then opened, to allow two fine Turkish frigates to pass from the dockyard. This bridge consists of a number of parts, each supported by four barges...two of the divisions of the bridge were removed, leaving a large open space. Near each extremity of the bridge is a wooden arch, high enough to allow boats and barges to pass...Without the outer bridge are to be seen large steamers and sailing-vessels constantly arriving and sailing, men-of-war, coasting vessels of every build and rig, and karjiks of light and graceful form passing to and fro for lime. Latterly, too, several small steamers arrive every forenoon with passengers from the neighbouring towns...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850.
