Black Ebony Tree with strangler vine

This Black Ebony Tree (Diospyros tessellaria), in the native forest of the Black River Gorges National Park, Mauritius, is host to a strangler vine that has enveloped the tree. A section of black ebony can be seen at the base of the trunk. This endemic tree is probably the most famous tree in Mauritius because of its association with early settlement of the island. The tree's black trunk is covered in white patches of lichen. It can grow up to about 46 feet high.
