Fresco in the church of Santa Maria de Taüll, Catalonia, Spain, (1928). '12th Century...The Virgin Mary and child are sitting in the mandorla in front of a star-lit sky in the half dome of the apse. On the left Melchior is seen approaching, on the right Caspar and Balthazar. Apostles under the meander. The lower part of the painting is terminated by medallions with fabulous animals such as were often favoured in Romanesque and Gothic times'. Plate LVII, fig 127, from "An Encyclopaedia of Colour Decoration from the Earliest Times to the Middle of the XIXth Century" with explanatory text by Helmuth Bossert.
