Caption: Leo I (401-474), also known as Leo the Thracian, was born in Thracia to a Thraco-Roman family. He served in the Roman army before being placed on the throne by the Alan general, Aspar, who thought Leo would be an easily manipulated puppet emperor. Leo proved himself more independent than expected, and eventually assassinated Aspar. Leo was coronated in 457.
