Vitus Jonassen Bering (1681 - December 18, 1741) was a Danish cartographer, explorer, and an officer in the Russian Navy. He is known as a leader of two Russian expeditions, namely the First Kamchatka Expedition and the Great Northern Expedition, exploring the north-eastern coast of the Asian continent and from there the western coast on the North American continent. During the Great Northern Expedition his ship was wrecked on the Aleutian Islands. Suffering from scurvy like many of his crew, Bering steadily became too ill to command the ship and eventually died on the uninhabited island near the Kamchatka Peninsula, which was later given the name Bering Island in his honor.
