Wernher von Braun, Saturn V Rocket

Wernher von Braun (1912-1977), German rocket scientist, standing by the engines of the huge Saturn V rocket that he helped design. The Saturn V rocket was designed for the Apollo program to take astronauts to the Moon. It achieved this in 1969. Von Braun started his career in Nazi Germany, and was responsible for the long-range V-1 and V-2 missiles. These caused considerable damage and deaths to their targets. Von Braun was arrested for dissent by the Nazis. After his release he surrendered to US forces. He first worked on missiles for the US military before joining NASA soon after its foundation.Photographed at the Space Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama.
