Land Dayaks Of Borneo A Dayak Longhouse: The long communal verandah, with the rooms of the individual households leading off from it. Women are pounding rice, and beside the wooden pounders lie winnowing baskets. Groups of men are gossiping or working, a boy is minding his baby brother, and against the wall are bundles of rattan vine for making mats and ropes. Fifty families, comprising up to 400 people, live in houses opening off this long communal veranda where women pound their rice. Rattan for making ropes is piled against the wall. March 8, 1952.
