Title: Prehistoric mammals, Miocene-Oligocene
Caption: Prehistoric mammals, Miocene-Oligocene periods. This fauna is based on fossils found at Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, western Nebraska, USA, dating to 15-30 million years ago (the Miocene and Oligocene periods). At that time the area was hot tropical grassland. Antelope-like camels, Stenomylus, are being chased by two bear dogs, Daphaenodon. The large chalicothere, Moropus, is browsing on the tree at right. The shovel-tusk elephants, Gomphotherium (centre), a 'terrible pig', Dinohyus (centre left), and some pig-like oreodonts, Promerycochoerus (centre right) are in and around the waterhole. In the tree at left, a saber-tooth cat, Hoplophoneus, feasts on its prey. Cranes, Grus, fly overhead.
