NORMAN WALLEY. Odeon Cinema, New Street, Birmingham, 1985-1987. A view of the Odeon Cinema at night from the north-west, showing the illuminated tower sign and billboard. The final Paramount Theatre, part of a small chain of luxury theatres, opened in 1937 in New Street. The Paramount Theatre was taken over by Odeon in 1942 and its name was subsequently changed. In 1965 the cinema was renovated. In 1988, after this photograph was taken, the cinema was closed for subdivision into six screens. Additional screens were added in 1991 and 1998.
