Turkey, Didyma-Sculpted Medusa Head at the Didymaion (Temple of Apollo)

Didyma was a cult center for the city of Miletos. Didyma means "Twins", and is related to the god Apollo and his sister, Artemis. The enormous temple, Didymaion, was designed by Paionios and built from 300-299 BC (though never complete) over the remains of an older sanctuary, dating back to the 8th century BC. The Medusa head was originally part of a frieze on the architrave, possibly sculpted in the 2nd century AD Medusa's head became a very popular motif in Antiquity. The people of that time used this figure at temples. Garments, sarcophagi, vases and almost everywhere as a protector. It is one of the most used ornamental elements in the Temple of Apollo at Didyma.
