The Lander brothers (Richard and John), were captured and ransomed by Ibo river pirates in war canoes flying battle standards copied from European ships. John Lander (1807-1839) was the younger brother of Cornish explorer Richard Lemon Lander and accompanied him on his first expedition to western Africa.
