'Horse Guards Parade Framed in the Archway of Treasury Passage', c1935. Military parade ground off Whitehall in Westminster, London. It is the site of the annual ceremonies of Trooping the Colour on the monarch's official birthday, and Beating Retreat. Just right of centre is the Cadiz Memorial, a French mortar in the style of a Chinese dragon, which was captured at the battle of Salamanca. It was presented to Britain by Spain to mark the lifting of the siege of Cádiz in 1812 by the Duke of Wellington. From "Wonderful London, Volume 1", edited by Arthur St John Adcock.
