Portrait of the young Caracalla, late 2nd or early 3rd century. The eldest son of Septimius Severus, Caracalla (188-217) was Roman Emperor from 211, initially ruling alongside his brother Geta, until having him murdered. His rule, which was notorious for the massacres and persecutions he ordered, ended in 217, when he was assassinated by Julius Martialis, an officer of his personal bodyguard.  Found in the collection of The Hermitage, St Petersburg.
