France, Abbey of Fontenay-Dormitory and Church

Fontenay Abbey was founded by St. Bernard in 1118. It is one of the oldest Cistercian abbeys founded from Citeaux, the first monastery of the Cistercian reform founded in 1098. The abbey flourished between the 12th and 15th centuries, when over 200 monks served in the community. By the time of the French Revolution, there were no more than a dozen monks at Fontenay. The abbey continues to be the property of the Aynard family and since 1981 it is classified in the UNESCO World Heritage list.
