'The Martyrdom of St. Apolline', c1455, (1939). Saint Apollonia was one of a group of 2nd century virgin martyrs who suffered in Alexandria during a local uprising against the Christians prior to the persecution of Decius. According to legend, her torture included having all of her teeth violently pulled out or shattered. The illustration is part of the manuscript Livre d'heures d'Etienne Chevalier by Jean Fouquet. Forty pages of it (including this work) are held by the  Musee Conde, Chantilly, France. From Verve - Nos. 5-6, July-October 1939. [Verve, France, 1939].
