Miniature portrait of Vasco da Gama - Vasco Da Gama was born in 1469 in Sines, Portugal. As a young man, Vasco learned astronomy and navigation. He bacame a naval Officer in 1492. In 1497, King Manuel the First of Portugal asked Da Gama to find a sea route to India by sailing around Africa. Da Gamas father had been chosen to lead the expedition, but he died before the plans were completed.
