A molecular model of enterovirus 71 (EV71), a virus involved in epidemics of severe neurological diseases in children, and can cause polio-like syndrome permanent paralysis. Infection may result in diarrhea, rashes, and foot and mouth disease (HFMD). However it also has the potential to cause long term neurological and psychiatric disorders in children, and in some cases death. EV71 has undergone rapid evolutionary changes, contributing to its survival, ease of transmission, and evasion of a host's immune system.
