The Grand Duke George of Hesse and four members of his family were killed when a Belgian air linear in which they were travelling crashed and burst into flames at Steene, near Ostend, during a thick fog. The Royal party was flying to London for the wedding of the Grand Duke's brother, Prince Ludwig (the new Grand Duke), to Miss Margaret Geddes, daughter of Sir Auckland Geddes. November 18, 1937.
