Johann Heinrich JUNG-STILLING (12 September 1740-2 April 1817) German religious writer of pietism. Born Johann Heinrich Jung, he owes the pseudonym 'Stilling' to his autobiography 'Heinrich Stillings Jugend', published initially without his knowledge by his friend and fellow student Goethe; the name of Stilling, which he had since then, derives from the expression 'Stillen im Lande', 'the tranquilli of the country', used to describe the followers of pietism.
