Vase in the shape of an archaic bronze vessel (gu). Artist: Chen Jinhou (Chinese, active 18th century). Culture: China. Dimensions: H. 10 1/8 in. (25.7 cm). Date: 18th century.
Both the shape and decoration of the base derive from vessels first produced in China during the Shang (ca. 1600 - 1046 B.C. and Zhou (1046 - 256 B.C.) dynasties. Unlike porcelain pieces produced at Jingdezhen, work made in the Yixing kilns were often signed, in this case by Chen Jinhou, making this ceramic tradition the first example of studio pottery in global ceramic history.
