François Athanase de Charette de la Contrie, 1763 – 1796. French Royalist soldier and politician who served in the French Royal Navy during the American Revolutionary War and was one of the leaders of the Revolt in the Vendée against the revolutionary regime. Seen here carrying a sword which bears the inscription, Vive le Roi or Long live the king. From Galerie Historique de la Révolution Française, published c.1869.
