Woman Suffrage Procession,1913

Women suffragettes led by May Jane Walker Burleson (center on horseback). Woman carrying American flag is Edith Bentley Thomas Farquhar, a member of the Sandy Spring Quakers. The Woman Suffrage Procession was the first suffragist parade in Washington, DC, and the first large, organized march on Washington for political purposes. The procession was organized by the suffragists Alice Paul and Lucy Burns for the NAWSA.  Participation numbers vary between 5,000 and 10,000 marchers. Suffragettes and supporters marched down Pennsylvania Avenue on March 3, 1913, the day before President Wilson's inauguration. George Grantham Bain Collection (cropped and cleaned).
