Fallen Angels entering Pandemonium from Paradise Lost I. Martin John (1789-1854). In 1823, Martin was commissioned by Samuel Prowett, an American publisher, to illustrate Paradise Lost by John Milton, for which he was paid 2000 pounds. The poem concerns the Christian story of the rise of Man: the temptation of Adam and Eve by Satan and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden. Thus, Satan and his fallen angels can be interpreted to offer an overall critique of society and a justification of the Puritan commonwealth's attempts to ban actions deemed immoral.
