Grant (April 27, 1822 - July 23, 1885) was the 18th President of the United States. A career soldier, he graduated from West Point and served in the Mexican-American War. Under Grant, the Union Army defeated the Confederate military and ended the war with the American Civil War. His consecutive terms as President stabilized the nation during the turbulent Reconstruction period that followed. Alexander Hays (July 8, 1819 - May 5, 1864) was a Union Army general in the American Civil War, killed in the Battle of the Wilderness. No photographer credited, 1845 (cropped and cleaned).
