Oxidation of glycerine by potassium permanganate. Ground potassium permanganate (KMnO4) is placed in a mound on a ceramic tile. Some glycerine (C3H8O3) is poured onto the mound using a syringe. As the reaction starts, smoke appears and glycerine starts burning with a purple flame. The redox reaction is: KMnO4 + C3H8O3 -> K2CO3 + Mn2O3 + CO2 + H2O.
