Warships Race To Gold Coast Governor Declares Emergency -- H.M.S. Nereide (1,400 tons), at Simonstown. The sloop carries a main armament of six four-inch guns. Two sloops of the South Atlantic Squadron, the Actaeon and Nereide, (1,400 tons) have hurriedly left Simons town South Africa, for Accra on the Gold Coast, where more disturbances by African ex-Servicemen followed a week-end of rioting in which 14 people lost their lives. The Gold Coast Government, is investigating allegat-fully killed a number of people when breaking up an ex-Serviceman's procession protesting against the cot of living. March 05, 1948.
