Johann Ludwig Burckhardt, Swiss Explorer

Johann Ludwig Burckhardt (1784-1817) was a Swiss traveller and orientalist. He wrote his letters in French and signed Louis. He studied in Leipzig, University of Göttingen and briefly studied Arabic at the University of Cambridge. He is best known for rediscovering the unique ruins of Al Khazneh in the city of Petra in Jordan. In 1817, Burckhardt suffered from dysentery and died on October 15, 1877. He had from time to time carefully transmitted to England his journals and notes, and a copious series of letters, so very few details of his journeys have been lost. He gave his collection of 800 volumes of oriental manuscripts to the library of Cambridge University. This image has been color-enhanced.
