John Gilpin riding to Edmonton, 1878. John Gilpin was the subject of an 18th century ballad by William Cowper. It describes how, on a journey to Edmonton, he became separated from the rest of the journey after losing control of his horse, and ended up in the town of Ware, ten miles away from his intended destination.
