An engraving depicting Lot fleeing Sodom and Gomorrah

An engraving depicting Lot fleeing Sodom and Gomorrah when an earthquake circa 1900 BC destroyed them. In the background (right) is Lot's wife turned into a pillar of salt because she looked back. There is evidence of a massive earthquake in the area at this date, and the legend of fire and brimstone could well have arisen from the escape of petroleum gases. Engraved by William Marshall Craig (1765-1827) an English painter. Dated 19th century.
