Paricutin Eruption, 1943

Paricutin (or Volcan de Paricutin, also accented Paricutin) is a dormant scoria-cone volcano located in the Mexican state of Michoacan. Paricutin erupted from 1943 to 1952, unusually long for this type of volcano and with several eruptive phases. The eruption began on February 20, 1943, at about 4pm. On that first day, the volcano had begun strombolian pyroclastic activity and within 24 hours, there was a scorian cone 165 fee high, created by the ejection of lapilli fragments up to the size of a walnut and larger, semi molten volcanic bombs. By the end of the week, reports had the cone between 350 to 500 feet high. Soon after the start the valley was covered in smoke and ash.
